In a factory he did toil
From home he cycled to the workshop gate
Where he worked with slurry and oil
In a bag slung over his shoulder
Was a sandwich box and tea
In a shirt and tie and boiler suit
A working man was he
National service in the R.A.F.
Football he'd watch and play
A seaside holiday once a year
At Sunday church he'd sing and pray
But he was more than just a working man
He was a father and husband too
Beethoven and Bing he liked to hear
Half a mild his favourite brew
He served his time as a working man
When death took him from his toil
His sensitive soul was now released
No more slurry, no more oil
In a bag slung over his shoulder
Was his sandwich box and tea
In a shirt and tie and boiler suit
The working man was free
