Parted

SLEEP on, Beloved, in thy place of rest,
Where God doth hide thee 'neath His sheltering love ;
While I, by sense of loneliness opprest,
Will trust the guidance of my Lord above

Our love can never die ; I feel thee near ;
Thy spirit soothes me in my saddest mood ;
And though a veil's between, I have no fear
That thou art lost to me, for God is good.

But O my feeble heart, it still doth crave
Thy lost embraces and thy loving care :
Yet life still holds a joy this side the grave,
To know thou lov'dst me with a love so rare.

I am so weak : I say "God's will be done,"
And yet I pine to clasp thy living hand ;
But He who victory over death have won
Doth understand ---ah yes !---doth understand :

He sends me solace, and in His good time,
Will lend me mystic wings to soar above
The griefs of earth, and in a happier clime
Will re-unite us in Immortal Love.
