Might or Right For Ever?

Though life's short day reach many years
Of  chequered joy and sorrow,
Yet seed well sown and trees well grown,
Will raise bright hopes to-morrow.

If love of right is sometimes tried
With selfish thoughts to sever,
Shall tyrants' might unlinked with right
Oppress mankind forever ?

Whate'er of good has crowned our life,
We'll bless the gift and Giver ;
And keep in sight that law of right
'Twixt rich and poor forever.

No prosperous times shall make us vain,
Or slight a poorer brother ;
The world was made of light and shade,
For him---and many another.

Oh precious love ! Canst thou be weighed
In sordid scales, or measured ?
Yet rich and poor may find that door
Where righteous deeds are treasured.

When justice, love and right combine,
No earthly power can sever ;
Such gems are found in love-lit ground,
Where "Right will reign for ever !"

Elijah Stanley (1839-1915) was my great great grandfather. Born the son of a Bitmaker in [Upper] Hall Lane, Elijah was set on to work as soon as he was able. In the 1850s he started his own business in Mountrath Street as a gig saddler and harness manufacturer. On the 1881 Census (now living in Lysways Street), Elijah describes himself as a Saddlers Ironmaker & Harness Maker employing 6 men, 9 boys and 13 females; also a Congregational Lay Reader. As such, he was well known in the locality, conducting services as far away as Cannock, Hednesford, Armitage and other outlying villages. He was deeply interested in the progress of Walsall, holding liberal views, and was a political admirer of William Gladstone.
According to newspaper reports of the time, poetry was his greatest hobby, offering him different ways in which to express his beliefs. He had many poems published in local newspapers and also wrote hymns. I enjoyed being able to read one of his works, many thanks for including it on 100 Walsall Poems.

I made an error on the dates. Elijah was born in 1829.
