Might or Right For Ever?

Though life's short day reach many years
Of  chequered joy and sorrow,
Yet seed well sown and trees well grown,
Will raise bright hopes to-morrow.

If love of right is sometimes tried
With selfish thoughts to sever,
Shall tyrants' might unlinked with right
Oppress mankind forever ?

Whate'er of good has crowned our life,
We'll bless the gift and Giver ;
And keep in sight that law of right
'Twixt rich and poor forever.

No prosperous times shall make us vain,
Or slight a poorer brother ;
The world was made of light and shade,
For him---and many another.

Oh precious love ! Canst thou be weighed
In sordid scales, or measured ?
Yet rich and poor may find that door
Where righteous deeds are treasured.

When justice, love and right combine,
No earthly power can sever ;
Such gems are found in love-lit ground,
Where "Right will reign for ever !"
