Gone are the old chain makers
The coal mines and the mills
The blacksmith, the cobbler
And associated skills
This town that once was booming
Where leather goods were made
Now accommodates the remnants
Of the saddler trade
And where is the scissor grinder?
The pedlar of the prop?
The pawn broker? the hawker?
And the good old corner shop?
The Victorian railway station?
The Priory? the Ox?
The gas lamps? The cinema`s?
And the old fashioned letter box?
Today with new technology
From modern Walsall springs
Superstores with sliding doors
And magic eyes and things
Surveillance video camera`s
And closed circuit T.V.
Though mostly changed
Or re-arranged
It still looks good to me
The college of science and art remains
Embracing the cenotaph
Displaying the Walsall coat of arms
And the bear and the ragged staff
